REPRODUCTION:
Coyotes become sexually mature at around one year of age. They usually mate from January to March and produce one litter per year. The gestation period is about 63 days. Some females may breed in the winter following their birth, especially if food is abundant. Litters typically consist of five to seven pups, but litters of 13 pups have been recorded. The pups are often relocated from the den to larger spaces, such as brush thickets or sinkholes near water sources.
Sometimes, multiple litters of pups may share the same den. This may occur when different females mate with the same male. Coyotes may also mate with their kin when their population density is high. This can result in deformities in their offspring. For several weeks, the adult coyotes bring food to their pups. Other coyotes that are kin to the pair may also assist in feeding and caring for the young.
The pups begin to emerge from the den at 3 weeks of age, and they join the adults in hunting or scavenging after 2 months. The pups usually wean by 6 weeks of age. The adults and the pups usually remain together until the fall or early winter, when the pups become independent. Sometimes, groups of pups can be observed until the mating season begins. The pups may travel more than 50 miles away from their birthplaces.

DENNING AND COVER:
Coyotes like to bed in sheltered areas, but they may seek underground refuge when the weather is harsh or when they are pursued. They mainly use dens to raise their pups. Coyotes often create or expand holes that smaller animals have dug. Dens can vary from 3 feet to 50 feet in length and may have more than one entrance. Dens are usually hidden and protected (e.g., in steep banks, rock crevices, sinkholes, or thickets), typically within a mile of water.

BEHAVIOR :
In spring, coyotes have their pups and nurse them until summer. They need more food for themselves and their young during this period. This matches the time when lambs or calves are vulnerable to attacks as they graze on pastures or rangelands. Predation may also increase in autumn, when juvenile coyotes disperse from their natal ranges and search for new habitats.

Coyotes tend to be nocturnal and crepuscular in hot summer weather. They may switch to diurnal hunting when they are mating and breeding, when human presence is low, and when the weather is cool. Coyotes usually hunt solo or in pairs. They often cover long distances while hunting. If food is abundant, coyotes may remain in the same area for some time. They sometimes cache excess food for future consumption.

Coyotes are adaptable animals that can live close to humans. Studies have found that coyotes can adjust their breeding and migration patterns in response to human interference. Their populations increase when humans try to reduce them. Many coyotes do not survive past their first year and their lifespan in the wild is usually less than eight years.

HABITAT :
Coyotes have a remarkable ability to adapt to different habitats in North America. They can thrive in diverse environments such as deserts, swamps, tundra, grasslands, brush, and dense forests. They can also live at various altitudes, from sea level to mountain tops. They are particularly abundant near urban and suburban areas such as Los Angeles, Pasadena, Phoenix, Denver, New York City, and Chicago.

FOOD HAB:
Coyotes are adaptable predators that prey on a variety of animals depending on their availability. They eat dead animals, small mammals, hoofed animals, insects, farm animals, and birds. In winter, spring, and summer, coyotes mostly eat meat, but they may switch to a more plant-based diet in fall, when fruits and vegetables make up more than half of their food intake. Coyotes enjoy fruits such as watermelons, persimmons, and berries. They may also consume food items associated with humans, such as trash and pet food.

Coyotes prey on animals that are easy to catch. They may kill cats or small dogs, but they may avoid larger dogs. They usually go after large wildlife that are young, inexperienced, old, sick, or injured. However, they also consider opportunity and behavior when choosing their prey. For instance, a coyote may pick a strong, healthy lamb from a flock instead of weaker, smaller ones. This is because the stronger lambs tend to be on the edge and move more, making them more vulnerable to attack.
